THE STORY BEHIND OUR PANTRY

Radical Family Farms is a three-acre certified organic farm in Sebastopol, California. We grow Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, and Southeast Asian heritage vegetables, herbs, and flowers — and make every shelf stable product on this page from ingredients we grow ourselves.

Every chili, chrysanthemum flower, and olive is estate grown on our farm in Sebastopol and Sonoma. This is not a curated product line. It is a farm line.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTS

Founder Leslie Wiser is a first generation American - Mixed-Asian American, Chinese-Taiwanese and German Polish-Jewish - who grew up across the Midwest with fragments of multiple culinary traditions that were difficult to access fully. The shelf stable products at Radical Family Farms came directly from that experience: growing Chinese heritage chili varieties from authentic seed, cultivating Bó Júhuā chrysanthemum that is nearly impossible to source in the United States, pressing estate olive oil on the day of harvest, fermenting chili paste from chilies grown on the farm.

These products exist because the ingredients matter and because they are hard to find. Growing them is how Radical Family Farms closes that distance.

Why This Matters

Many Chinese and Taiwanese heritage ingredients are difficult to source in the United States — specialty chili varieties, specific chrysanthemum cultivars, traditionally fermented condiments. When small farms stop growing them and small producers stop making them, they become harder to find and eventually disappear from the market entirely.

Radical Family Farms grows these crops and makes these products to keep them accessible — for home cooks, chefs, and families who want to cook with authentic ingredients without searching too hard to find them.

Leslie also farms with her children in mind. Growing up with access to these ingredients, and knowing where they come from, is part of how the farm passes culinary heritage to the next generation.

The farm

Three acres in Sebastopol, California. Established 2018. First growing season 2019.

Radical Family Farms sits in the Gold Ridge growing region of Sebastopol — the same fine sandy loam soils where Luther Burbank established his experimental farm in 1885 and developed over 800 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and grains. He called Sonoma County "the chosen spot of all this earth, as far as nature is concerned." The mild coastal climate, long growing season, and well-drained Gold Ridge soils that drew Burbank here are the same conditions that make this land productive for the specialty crops Radical Family Farms grows today.

We specialize in culturally significant crops for the Asian diaspora alongside the ingredients that go into every product on this page. Agroecological, regenerative, no-spray, chemical-free, low-till farming practices. Non-GMO seed sourcing. Certified organic.
